Hi all, as the Scotch Old Collegians have updated their website, we’re moving on over there. New site can be found below: www.scotchoc.com.au/soccerJust Click on ‘Clubs’ then ‘Soccer’ Thanks! Compared to the last time we faced up against the Unley boys a decidedly mild and boring day greeted us. The muddy slush that was the pitch had hardened, leaving a rock hard surface with very little grass. After an impressive 5-2 win against fellow relegatory contenders Norwood the week before, we were in a good frame of mind heading into a game we had to get a result from to guarantee our place in the 1A league. The game started well for the Scotchies, with us holding the majority of possession and having numerous attacking chances. The first breakthrough came from El’Capitano Ferg when his long range effort went untouched past 6 or 7 players and nestled in the bottom corner. The rest of the first half was more back and forth, but with neither side finding a goal. The second half saw Unley pull one back from a long looping header and then they took the lead with a second through a dubious penalty. 1-2 to Unley. Despite some good possession, we found it hard to penetrate the Unley defence for the majority of the 2nd half. Prior to the game Oggy had made a show of how easy penalties were, so it was unanimously decided that if the need arose, Oggy would be the one to step up. Loe and behold, the Ref (obviously feeling his earlier penalty was unjustified) saw a push somewhere in the box and awarded us a late penalty. Oggy’s face went white as a sheet and as he stepped up stated “Don’t blame me if I miss!”. There was little chance of that, as our keeper sent their keeper the wrong way, with the ball slotted neatly in the corner. 2-2 and we were almost there. One final dangerous effort from the Unley skipper looked to have won it for the rangers but Man of the match Oggy pulled off a marvelous save to keep the game at 2-2. The final whistle eventually came and we had secured the necessary point requied to avoid relegation. Oh, and for those of you who were wondering, Norwood lost 5-1, so we would have stayed up regardless! Thanks to everyone for their efforts this season, next year can only get better! We will be having an end of season dinner in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on our Facebook page. Hope to see a lot of you there! Scotch A’s 1 - 2 Unley A’s For the first time this season, we managed to score first. A bobbling ball and an out of position Unley keeper saw Ferg walk home the first of the game. Another mistake from their hapless keeper saw Lee gifted with an open goal, only for a defender to clear off the line with his head. Unfortunately some sloppy defending at the back gave away our third penalty in as many matches, much to Ryno’s mild irritation. The penalty was duly converted, levelling the scores. The second half saw a lift in intensity from the Scotchies which resulted in numerous half chances that we were unable to convert. Timmy began to become more of a presence down the right and looked to be in on goal when he was brought down by their ungainly left back. The Ref thought likewise and gave the Unley defender his marching orders. The resulting free-kick was struck well, but was slightly high and flew over the bar. Despite Unley being down to 10 men, we were unable to score the elusive equaliser, with Unley desperately hanging on. Scotch B’s 0 - 7 Unley A’s Scotch A’s 1 - 6 Uni Black A’s Scotch A’s 1 - 4 Uni White A’s Scotch B’s 0 - 4 Uni White B’s Pembroke A’s 4 – 2 Scotch A’s Pembroke B’s 10 -2 Scotch B’s CBC 2B’s 3 - 2 Scotch B’s (AET) Sacred Heart A’s 8 – 1 Scotch A’s Sacred Heart B’s 4 – 0 Scotch B’s After months of pre-season and a couple of practice matches, it was time once again to begin the season proper. The overall squad was looking a lot deeper than it has in recent years with several new recruits and several returning ones bolstering our ranks. Despite this influx of recruits, we still managed to find ourselves down 7 players through injury or “more important” commitments. Of the new recruits, debuts went to Tinashe, Sareen, Ross, Michael and Lee. Immanuel A’s 2 – 1 Scotch A’s The A’s saw a last minute withdrawal from the 2 Fergie Bro’s and a last minute inclusion of our 2008 Player of the Year Matty Duns. Immanuel has been an interesting proposition for us over the last couple of years, with a loss, 2 draws and a 7-1 win defining our past 4 clashes. With the absence of Fergie Jr., Haydn gladly stepped up to fill in the central midfield roll with Lee. The match started as a fairly scrappy affair, with numerous turn-overs and hopeful long balls. Slowly we started to settle, and the passes started becoming more fluent. We had numerous good attacking opportunities, but couldn’t manage to finish the final pass or shot. At the other end, a miss-kicked clearance fell to an Immanuel player and he rammed it home. Heading into the second half, Immanuel packed their defence, getting numbers behind the ball at any opportunity. To their credit, Immanuel scrambled well, blocking several good shots. A counter-attack and practically only their second meaningful shot resulted in their second goal. Ross came on off the bench and added a good presence up front. It was his free-kick that resulted in our only goal. Toby managed to get a head on a ball which was deflected off an Immanuel head and looped over their helpless keeper. We pushed forward in the final few minutes, but to no avail. All in all, a game in which we had the majority of attacking chances, but failed to convert. Plenty to work on for next week vs Sacred Heart! Immanuel B’s 3 – 0 Scotch B’s The mighty Scotch B’s began the day with an attacking formation, aiming to increase our productivity up front. The balance of the first half went Immanuels way, with Niall making some important saves and clearances. A late 1 on 1 resulted in the first goal for Immanuel, just before halftime. The second half saw Scotch come out looking more attacking, only for a defensive error to give Immanuel and easy second. Following several good chances, including a good header from Will, we were unlucky not to grab at least a goal. Meanwhile Immanuel took another of their chances to make it 3-0. A performance that showed glimpses of the football that we want to start playing this year, with Pandy very solid in the middle of the park. Hi All, first game of the season is away to Immanuel this Saturday. Everyone needs to register on www.myfootballclub.com.au and send the number assigned to me (christianjrogers@gmail.com) |
